Late Shri S. Venkiteswaran
Senior Advocate
Founder-President of IMLA
Mr S. Venkiteswaran, Senior Advocate, who pioneered the establishment of the Indian Maritime Law Association (IMLA), was its first President till he passed away on 21st December 2013. Mr Venkiteswaran had several decades of distinguished practice, chiefly in Shipping, Maritime, Aviation and related matters. He had appeared in all the High Courts in India and also the Hon'ble Supreme Court of India.
During his long career as a lawyer, he rendered legal advice and represented most of the Indian shipping companies. The shipping industry knew him as India's foremost expert on maritime law. He had advised the Government of India, from time to time, and had been associated with several Committees constituted by the Government of India for drafting of legislations as also subordinate legislations.
One of his pet subjects was the formation of a maritime constituency in India, to bring together under one umbrella all the players in the Indian industry, including the Government, trade associations, lawyers, shipping companies, insurance companies, the companies and other professionals servicing the maritime sector. He was able to achieve this objective by the formation of the Committee Maritime - India (CM-I) (later on renamed as the Indian Maritime Law Association), becoming its Founder-President.
